Well, didn't see that one coming.
@BNightengale Bob Nightengale
#mlb Congratulations to Robin Ventura, who just got named #White Sox manager
This is kind of out of nowhere.
I believe this would be the definition of out of nowhere. Did he even interview? All I can find by way of news breaks about this is a one sentence USA today "article"
Wasn't Martinez slated to interview tomorrow?
Sadly, another JR mouthpiece era begins.
What kind of experience does he have? What kind of a manager is he?
Really ?? Thats just Kenny trying to get the fans on his side with getting an ex Sox player
I certainly don't hate this move but what a fucking left field choice
Can't wait to play the Rangers.....
I think Ventura will make an excellent hitting coach!
I wanted some of that Rays magic. And, you know, someone with a modicum of sexperience.
My thoughts exactly
Has he ever been in an mlb dugout as a coach before?
Reinsdorf just loves to run former fan-favorites into exile.
Can't believe Cowley didn't break this one
JR loyalty move?
From what I'm hearing this was KW's choice.
Ventura? And they hired him so quickly?
Fuller frowns upon his lack of executive experience
The real question is... does Robin have any latino offspring?
I hope he brings in Kotsay as his hitting coach
I love it!!! WOW!!!!!!!
Fuck you Nolan!!!!!!
Meh, he'll win another series in '13 and get sent packing in 2019
Holy shit, I just sawr this. Sweet PR move, Brooks.
And of course they didn't even come close to getting a seasoned manager or probably even making a sound baseball decision (based on Ventura's complete lack of any sort of coaching experience). It's more like "we'll replace one fan favorite with another! The fans'll love it!" Nice job selling out opening day at least, I guess. Baffling. Let's see how that works out for you if they're tanking in June.
I mean, I love Robin Ventura, don't get me wrong, but does he have any experience in managing or being a bench coach? Hitting coach? Hell, even Ryne (not Ryan) Sandberg has had to put in several years in the minors and he still hasn't gotten an MLB job.
This one is an odd one. I suspect that a big reason Robin was picked was because he will get along with all of the players, unlike a certain loudmouthed Venezuelan.
I think you're overstating things. If Ryne Sandberg is not a manager, I doubt it's because "he hadn't put in enough seasons in the MiLB". Come on now.
Yeah, there may be more to it than simple experience -- Ryno probably has some entrenched allies as well as enemies within the Cubs organization, or his private personality is such that Cubs management didn't think he'd be a good fit when Quade was offered the job.
Ventura puts asses in the seats, but has nothing to do with innovation /some Zoso
Double Play Kotsay?
So I guess when Ventura's gone in a few years it'll be Frank's turn? And Frank's firing should align perfectly with Konerko's induction as new manager somewhere around 2018 or so.
Also, they should definitely make Frank hitting coach for sure now that they officially seems to care more about bringing back fan favorites than winning.
Meh. I was initially enraged, but I'm pretty sure this hire is a sign of things to come in the offseason. Once TCQ, Danks, Buehrle depart, there's not going to be a lot of quality to work with. Probably wouldn't be able to snag Francona with that sort of roster, though I really liked the prospect of Dave Martinez.
A.J. Hinch was the last guy to be hired with no managerial experience. The Dbacks fired him 13 months later. I'm guessing Robin won't have that short of a shelf life..
he was an assitant high school coach for a year, that should cover the experience part of his resume
Yeah, seems like something that should be a second-tier consideration, unless things were so shitty with Ozzie, that KW + Jerry thought that the lack of morale was a primary issue.
I'll be ecstatic if the Sox rattle off their first ever back-to-back playoff appearances, albeit with regular season records of exactly .500.
I'd also if Kenny strangles Robin Ventura at some point during the season.
Come on man, Ventura might not have any experience but VDN was a full blown retard.
I would have went with The Choice.
No, but it's a similar hire, no?
We're getting a good guy to make up for a dickwad with zero coaching experience. Of course they aren't one in the same but I can't help but think of the similarities.
Can't wait to see him handle a bullpen.
Or is Coop the power behind the throne now?
Hustle! Teamwork! C'mon guys!
VDN was pure class but egad was he a terrible coach.
That's Coop's realm.
