He'll go to some team that inexplicably has infinite money. Texas, etc.

I think Seattle needs to do something big to accompany the Cano signing.

I agree. I think he ends up in Seattle.

The Cubs will also be the high bidder, so it's hard to see a scenario where he ends up with the Sox

Several is 5+, he is going to get that. This was just a "hey we tried" meeting IMO. I would be excited of they got him, but for the contract he is going to get, there is a lot of risk so whatevs.

It could be that they're trying to explain to him that he is still a fit even as they kind of retool the position players and aren't really ready to win yet.

In all seriousness though, while I don't think this is likely - Reinsdorf isn't getting any younger and the Sox haven't been all that shy about spending. The moves this offseason have shown they're trying to take a short route to this re-build.

Maybe JR also realizes yeah you overpay a little for a guy like this but stuff like this is what draws crowds to games, makes you one of the stories of the season. I can't imagine Tanaka's first home start not being a sellout. If he lives up to the hype, all his starts will be sellouts. Not to mention it'll probably draw more Asian people to the stadium.

I remember when Chien Ming Wang made a start at Comiskey a few years ago. There was a whole section of Orientals in the outfield that had a huge sign that said We (HEART) Wang. I lol'd.

That article still reeks of "hey we tried." They didn't offer the most money and aren't as good of a fit as Seattle. Thats fine however, because this dude is going to sign a ridiculous contract. Obviously he might be awesome, but if he burns out or gets injured that team is going to hate life for the next 5-6 seasons. I honestly think Seattle gets him.

I don't know if Seattle is that much better a fit than the Sox, but I think it makes sense in that they have to do more than they've done. I can't imagine the plan was just to sign Cano and be done, especially given his age. That signing was a "we're going to be real contenders by 2016" signing.

I don't know the exact ethnic demographics of each city, but I know that Seattle seems to have a more Asian culture than Chicago based on my experiences. You can take that either way, either he sees stability in Seattle or opportunity in Chicago. Obviously Chicago probably has more Asian residents than Seattle due to pure size, so the Sox could gain a largely untapped market share from that other team if they get this guy. I just highly doubt they overcome the Yankees' dollar offer or Seattle with the Iwakuma connection, Nintendo ownership, and Ichiro history. I mean, each team basically has the same shot at winning if he signs with them. The M's have to overcome Texas and LAA to do so, but the Sox also have a large unknown in Abreu.

Who knows how he's going to weigh chances of winning vs. quality of life vs. money.

Seattle is more attractive than most other cities to many Japanese, I imagine.

Sure, I think he'd fit well there, I was just talking about the teams themselves.

His wife seems to have a lot of say in this and given her possible career ambitions, NY or LA could win out.

otoh the ol' "The wife is gonna be key!" is a recurring narrative in FA negotiations that has very little correlation to the actual inevitable signing

I could see him wanting to go to the Cubs because he'd be the unquestioned ace of the staff. He would need to prepare to be on a losing team for at least a couple years though.

With the White Sox he probably makes them a borderline playoff team- all depending on how the lineup pans out.
